Hijabin’ in Mexico

I just returned from my husband and I’s belated honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It was such a beautiful and different experience. The ocean was constantly surrounding us, no matter where we looked (living in Missouri – trust me that means a whole lot). It was just nice to experience something that we weren’t used to. One thing I really noticed is that customer service actually means something in PV, almost everyone we came across was so polite and willing to help.

Although the sun was always shining it did get very hot at times – especially riding in taxis that didn’t have their AC running. And hijabis do not make very good friends with the heat. No matter what I wore I felt like I was melting. So really no matter if you’re wearing a hijab or a bikini on the beach, you’re still going to feel it. So it just means a chance to get creative! I would avoid jeans because they will stick to you like it’s no one’s business. I tried my best to stick with dresses and anything flowy.

Another thing I learned from this trip is NOT to overpack. I found myself using the same shoes and purse (while I packed about 5 pairs and 2 purses). I always make sure I have enough outfits for each day, but then that thought jumps in my mind of “what if…” I like to be safe than sorry, but we just need to know where to draw the line. Instead of bringing extra outfits – maybe just bring extra articles of clothing (like a shirt or extra pants).

Us Hijabis wish we could lay out and tan on the beach or wear those adorable short summer dresses, but we are blessed with the opportunity for some creativity. Which is what we should always try to embrace as hijabis! So below I have compiled my looks from my wonderful vacation in Mexico.

  1. Beautiful pics, alf mabrook! Can you share which resort you went to? We’re looking for a honeymoon destination for a fellow hijabi and highly considering Mexico (or Argentina) for proximity and weather purposes (honeymoon in Jan.) Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks! <3

    1. Thank you so much! My husband and I actually won a 3 night stay at Villa Mandarinas. It was SO pretty. You can’t go wrong with any resort there to be honest. I know Groupon has a lot of all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Vallarta. The one thing I would recommend is either renting a car or even taking the bus to get around (taxis are a bit expensive). We went in October and it was very hot for the most part, but one day did get a little cloudy. So I would recommend looking up the weather for January. If you decide to go to Mexico, there will be people trying to convince you to purchase different activities or allowing you access to resorts for a day at the airport. We made the mistake of believing them, but it really turned out that they were trying to sell timeshares. Other than that, I think PV is a must, it’s beautiful.
